Amusing Indeed

I find it highly amusing that Autodesk took the legal route to direct eBay to stop Tim Vernor from reselling AutoCAD 14 on eBay, something they already got paid for, but cannot get Google to take down Orkut Communities and Google Blogs that use Google servers and resources to offer pirated version of AutoCAD. And if Autodesk did direct Google to take action, Google seems to have extended its middle finger to Autodesk. You see, either way its quite amusing.

Also amusing is the fact that people are still willing to pay for and use AutoCAD 14.

I think the difference might be in this: Autodesk sued the seller, not the firm facilitating the sale (eBay). In the case of Google-owned Orkut and Blogger, Autodesk may have a difficult time going after the sellers due to the anonymous nature of those online communities. In contrast, eBay sellers are easy picking.

Reasons why people might want AutoCAD R14:

    * They want to have “AutoCAD,” but don’t understand the difference between versions.

    * R14 is good enough for their needs. (Even v2.5 is good enough for some!)

    * They might be software collectors for historical puposes — like me. (I have 300-400 old software packages. CadKey Object Developer, anyone?)

As for Vernor, he just re-sells what he can get his hands on. The entrepreneurial spirit at work.

Ralph, from what I gathered, the seller has sued Autodesk, not the other way around.

    Oops… I meant Autodesk _blocked_ the seller…

Autodesk didn’t block the seller, eBay did. Autodesk simply requested eBay to do so.

To take down an Orkut community or blog, Google simply needs to set a flag in its database. Whether the user is anonymous or not is irrelevant.

Google has the means to do what it right. What it lacks is the will.
