CAD On The Cloud Article In TCT Magazine

This month’s edition of TCT Magazine had an opinion piece written by me on CAD On The Cloud. For those who are interested you can download the PDF file here. The article’s pull quote reads:

Another question asked is “Who owns my data?” The question itself is a self refuting idea because of the word ‘my’. Just because your ‘data’ resides on someone else’s server, it does not become theirs.

    Tell me how it works out for you. I am not going to go there for any cad related stuff that involves my data or files.

    Deelip by your own words the data will have to reside on a server at where ever the cad program is being used so help me out here. Why should I own all the hardware I allready have to have to run, hire someone to do this cloud thing at my facility on my equipment and then charge me for the priveledge of their cloud whatever that is. So just what has anyone who does this accomplished?

    The biggest misunderstanding about the cloud is the idea that it will actualy work or benefit someone besides the cad vendor who has suckered them with new and wonderfull, please pay here. Kind of reminds me of the IPhone 4 guys spending lots of cash and then looking for posts on how to jerry rig their phones to avoid blocking the antennae. Articles on jailbreaking everywhere to wrest control back from a truly greedy corporation. But it's cool, expensive and trendy and proves the owner is cutting edge.

    If you have been following my drift, you will have noticed me saying that CAD on the Cloud is far more beneficial to the CAD vendors rather than to the users. There are benefits to the users as well. But those benefits are things that this generation of users can easily do without.

    To give you an analogy, proprietary file formats do not benefit users in any way. They only benefit the vendors. Yet, users continue to use them because they have no other choice. One fine day, the same thing will happen to the cloud (or something like it) as well.

    Like I have said before, the thinking that vendors “listen” to their customers is a myth. They listen only when what they hear suits them. At SolidWorks World 2010, SolidWorks itself announced that backward file compatibility was a second most wanted thing. Yet, it has not been implemented, in spite of the SolidWorks product manager himself admitting to me on record that not giving backward compatibility is a business decision and not a technical one. What does that tell you?

    Why and how did cloud computing become a buzz word in the CAD industry ?
    Almost 2 years ago Merrril Lynch came out with a report that cloud computing will be nearly $100 billion market. That made all the software vendors jump on the cloud computing wagon hoping to get atleast 0.01% of that market. All the MBA's in the CAD industry were now directing their troops to follow the cloud scent.
    Anyways, you should read that report to get an idea on how fortune-tellers, palm readers, psychics, etc in Merril Lynch work. Also, it has a nice tidbit information about the difference between SaaS and cloud.

    Thanks for the reply. What it tells me is that the first cad company that starts to listen and then act on what they hear from users will find many new customers. I am watching with interest as the Dassault psuedopods strangle SW. I am optomistic at this time that there is one that has started to listen by the way and time will tell if I am right but first they need to prove it before I say much more.
