KOMPAS-3D V11 – Part 5

Here are the links to Part 1, Part 2, Part3 and Part 4.

After a disappointing attempt at doing some surfacing in KOMPAS-3D in Part 4 of this series, I decided to do some sheet metal modeling. In  Part 2 I had started the tutorial on Assembly Modeling and midway decided that I didn’t require to finish it. KOMPAS-3D comes with a tutorial on modeling sheet metal. But I decided to try and see if I could figure it out on my own. It is important to note that I already have some experience in sheet metal modeling in other MCAD systems. So if you are a 2D user, you may not be able to directly jump in and start modeling sheet metal in KOMPAS-3D. I suggest you complete the tutorial first.

Anyways, I decided to do some fun sheet metal modeling and this is what I came up with.

If you have done sheet metal modeling before you must have already guessed how I came up with this. Here is the flat pattern.

KOMPAS-3D has a nice feature called “Hole in Sheet Body”, which does exactly what it says. For what I was trying to do, that command was perfect since I didn’t need to create sketches on each face and cut holes. This is what I had in mind.

I created this sheet metal die using just edge bends because that was all that I needed. But KOMPAS-3D other methods of creating bends as well. For example, you can create a bend using a line, edge or axis in a sketch. You can also create several bends at once by using a contour in a sketch. Here is a picture I took from the KOMPAS-3D documentation.
