ZWCAD 2011 Design Contest

Chinese CAD software vendor ZWSoft has announced the ZWCAD 2011 Design Contest. The prize is $500 and “a possible job opportunity”. Not sure exactly what that means. I was a judge for last year’s contest and will be judging this year as well.

Participants should submit their designs by September 15. The submission should include a DWG file and a JPG image showing the ZWCAD user interface.

Last year some “wise” participants simply imported into ZWCAD some fancy looking ACIS SAT files they could get a hold of and submitted them as their entries. There are ways to find out when people do such things. Something tells me this will happen again this year. 😉

$500.00 for the top prize for the WORLD. . . really? AND or maybe a job??? I was a customer from V9 to V14.5 End to End. V14 before they were bought out was the best release out of those years. But since the effort to do direct editing began things have deteriorated significantly. The promised direct editing is crude and delayed the release for over two years and as far as I can see everything else has been ignored in the effort to get the direct editing to a point where they thought they could release it. After using ST for three years I can only say that when I tried ZW3D 2011 beta  their version of direct editing was nothing but an irritation. Cam is still a problem with bad paths and no post editor worth a flip. The few, and I mean few comments on the forums are basically all negative from long time users with the exception of the inclusion of the Transmagic translators, the only plus in roughly three years now. The forums are a sign I think of what users think of VX/ZW and it has dwindled to near nothing.

VX ran out of money I think and ended up making a bad decision to sell to someone in China to try to bail themselves out. No lathe anywhere on the horizon for the cnc shops. No sheetmetal to speak of for MCAD.

I sat down Sunday with a cam plan in V14.5 and as usual what should have been simple was not. This is on a family of parts done before and you would think that prior examples would allow for quick and easy cam plans. Such was not the case and finally by accident I came up with a cam plan. There are eight tapered and radiused holes in this part and I could not get anything to work right. Keep in mind I had other parts and cam plans to go by. Finally I get tired of regenerating cam plans with eight holes and cut it down to two holes for the feature. Son of a gun- – – now it works perfectly for the whole part including the other six I did not select. I don’t get it but I know I am replacing VX/ZW cam this fall so it does not upset me so much to waste time like this anymore. I know the end of VX/ZW for this user is in sight.

Buy ZW if you must for the complex surfaces capabilities which they are good in but don’t expect any other area to live up to your expectations.

    • Just so that you know, this contest if for ZWCAD, their 2D AutoCAD clone, not ZW3D.

You are so right. I did not get past the ZW part and did not realise there was a big ZW world out there besides 3D. I just never use 2D outside of draft files from my 3D programs so I knew nothing of ZWCAD. Roy, I will be in touch.
