HYLIXA – A 3D Printed Helical Bass Speaker

Our customer Node has pioneered the world’s first helical bass speaker called the HYLIXA. Their designers and sound engineers thought “out of the box” (pun intended) and designed a speaker in which the sound’s transmission line spirals inside the interior of the speaker’s cabinet for 1.6 meters.

This is a brilliant example of how 3D printing beautifully lends itself to manufacturing complex shapes. Each speaker is 3D printed as one piece without any joins by the 3D Systems sPro 60 SLS 3D printer using the Duraform GF material, a glass filled engineering plastic that delivers an excellent surface finish on parts which can be machined and painted.

The end result is sound that is described by industry experts using the words “radical”, “unusual” and “seductive”.
